The average 30-year fixed rate mortgage is 6.16% today, a decrease of 0.06% since yesterday. The 15-year fixed mortgage rate stands at 5.32%, down by 0.06%. The 30-year FHA mortgage now averages 5.59%, having dropped by 0.08. Meanwhile, the 30-year jumbo mortgage rate is 6.38%, reflecting a decrease of 0.02%.
The bigger picture
We'll be surprised if mortgage rates today move far. There will be plenty of empty desks on Wall Street as employees — and especially senior ones — extend their festive breaks into the weekend. And more than a few of those holding the fort will probably be nursing hangovers. The last thing they want is an exciting day with a lot of stressful, rapid trading.
Meanwhile, there's nothing on today's calendar to disturb markets. No economic reports are due.
Of course, the possibility of some unexpected event causing disruption never goes away. But there's no reason to expect such a thing today.
Mortgage rates recently
"The average 30-year fixed-rate mortgage decreased further this week," said Sam Khater, Freddie Mac’s chief economist, in an emailed statement on Christmas eve. "Declining rates offer a timely and welcome gift for aspiring homebuyers."
To greater and lesser extents, other sources concur with Freddie. ICanBuy shows mortgage rates only a little lower on Dec. 24 than they were on Dec. 1. But Mortgage News Daily suggests a wider gap.
Either way, with next week mostly looking quiet, it seems reasonable to hope that mortgage rates will enter 2026 in decent shape.

What's coming up?
Although economic reports are usually the main drivers of changes to mortgage rates, they're not the only ones. The general mood in markets and economically consequential news can also affect those rates. News items concerning employment, inflation, tariffs and deficit funding are especially influential at the moment.

Next Wednesday brings the minutes of the Federal Reserve rate-setting committee's last meeting, and those could cause a stir. Besides that, we may have to wait until 2026 for mortgage rate action.
