Mortgage Rates Today, December 22, 2025: The Start of a Slow Christmas Week?

Row of Houses: Mortgage rates today

The average 30-year fixed rate mortgage is 6.19% today, a decrease of 0.01% since yesterday. The 15-year fixed mortgage rate stands at 5.35%, up by 0.02%. The 30-year FHA mortgage now averages 5.58%, having dropped by 0.03. Meanwhile, the 30-year jumbo mortgage rate is 6.35%, reflecting a decrease of 0.02%.

The bigger picture

Average mortgage rates fell last week. Indeed, on Friday night, they were at their lowest since Dec. 3, according to ICanBuy. Or, excluding last Thursday, since Dec. 4, if you prefer Mortgage News Daily's take.

However, don't get too excited. Mortgage rates have been moving within a very narrow range over recent months. And, since the start of September, the highs and lows haven't been as far apart as you'd normally expect.

This week

There's nothing on this week's calendar that's likely to move mortgage rates far. Indeed, there are no reports at all on the economic calendar for today, Thursday or Friday.

Tomorrow's third-quarter gross domestic product (GDP) might make waves, as could that morning's consumer confidence index. But markets haven't been responding sharply to either of those recently.

That leaves unscheduled events as the most likely trigger for mortgage rate movements. We're not expecting any of those in the coming days, but, of course, they're inherently unpredictable.

So, we're not issuing guarantees when we say we're expecting a quiet Christmas week. We just think it's the most likely scenario. Of course, if any surprises do arise, you'll read about them here.

What's coming up?

Although economic reports are usually the main drivers of changes to mortgage rates, they're not the only ones. The general mood in markets and economically consequential news can also affect those rates. News items concerning employment, inflation, tariffs and deficit funding are especially influential at the moment.

There are no economic reports on today's MarketWatch economic calendar. But a few are due tomorrow. We'll brief you on those that morning.
